Troubleshooting an Automatic Gate

As a gate installer, you know what your clients want and need. Most have made their purchases for several reasons, including security and a sense of safety. In most cases, you are the final step. And though the equipment you install has been tested and retested, the installation process can have challenges. Here are a few of the most common issues you will encounter and what to do if you experience them.

• Power Outage. This may seem simple but, if the gate doesn’t open, begin with the obvious: make sure the power supply is connected correctly!  Power failures happen.  Ask your team to double-check the installation process, connections, and fuses.  Power is often restored simply by replacing a blown fuse or resetting the main breaker.

On another note: most homeowners will ask if a backup battery needs to be installed.   A backup battery allows people to enter and leave the property should there be a power outage.  Some operators have built-in battery back-up so be aware of that when you pair your customer with the desired operator.

• Cold Weather Installation. Metal components contract as the temperature drops.  Remind yourself to use grease specially intended for lower temperatures.  The wrong grease will make it harder for the gate to move and open since it requires more power.

• Noise Coming from the Box. Gates have moving parts, but new gates should be quiet.   A grinding noise indicates that there’s a mechanical issue you need to check.   Avoid a call to return to the property:   Never leave a customer with a noisy gate!

• Remote Control Issues. Most installers run a point test to make sure the gate works perfectly. A remote control that doesn’t work can be the result of a sensor problem or out of date batteries.  If the batteries are good, make sure the remote does not have a problem connecting with the receiver.  Also, double-check to make sure nothing is blocking the signal from the remote control.   If your signal strength is unreliable, consider installing the extended antenna kit to maintain service levels.

• Obstructions. As an installer, you know that automatic gates open by using sensors that trigger motion. If the gate doesn’t open, check the sensors as they could be blocked.  Explain to your clients that gates must be kept clear of debris.
