The geometry on a gate installation is one of the most crucial elements in making sure that the gate operator runs it’s best and lasts for some time. In each manual for an operator, the manufacturer is always sure to give all the information and measurements to properly install their equipment. No matter if it’s a swing gate operator or a slide operator, measurements are
critical.
When you are installing a swing operator that is using an actuator arm, like a Liftmaster LA 400 or an All-O-Matic Toro, the pivot point for the arm is absolutely crucial – – with the PIVOT POINT in the center of the hinge.
For these types of operators to function optimally, the angle of the arm to the gate when the gate is open should be roughly 20 degrees. This is where the arms get their best power to start the gate closing. Also, when the gate is opening, this helps to stop the gate in the proper position without any type of sway when it stops.
The measurements in this type of installation, no matter the brand, are very similar. In each manual for an operator, the manufacturer is always sure to give all the information and measurements to properly install their equipment. Make sure to read the manual to get the specific geometry for the respective product.
Don’t get intimidated by a pad mount or a post mount swing gate operator, even if it’s your first time installing one. Just remember, like an actuating arm, the measurements start with the PIVOT POINT which is the center of the hinge. Here are some tips:
- Take your time and layout the dimensions on the ground.
- The first measurement will be where the arm will attach to the gate when the gate is closed. From our experience, this measurement should be at least 1/3 of the length of the gate.
- You can usually use spray paint (preferably black so it won’t stand out) to mark your points on the ground.
- Once you get this laid out, double-check it before pouring the cement. Again, the manual will give you the measurements you need so there is no guesswork involved.
Also keep in mind that when installing this type of operator, pay attention to your surroundings – there should be plenty of room around the operator so the arms can swing freely and not have any obstructions.
